THE THIRTEENTH ANNUAL (1995)
KENYON SUMMER SCIENCE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

COMPETITIVE AWARDS TO STUDENT-FACULTY
RESEARCH TEAMS IN THE LABORATORY SCIENCES

The Kenyon Summer Science Scholars program provides opportunities for students to work in close collaboration with faculty mentors. In these research partnerships, students are full participants in the processes of creating a research plan, executing the project and preparing results for presentation in a public forum. Summer Science Scholars working on the Kenyon campus form a special community, with researchers in all science departments coming together for seminars and social activities. The Kenyon Summer Science Scholars Program is funded in one of two ways; by Kenyon College or individual research grants obtained by science facutly. Other summer research opportunities may be available under COSEN (the Carolinas & Ohio Science Education Network), adminstered as a separate consortial project by Susan Palmer, Executive Director, and if so, a separate announcement will be made.

SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS - Fellowships award $2,100.

ORAL AND WRITTEN REPORTS - On September 19, 1995, students are required to present the results of research by submitting a brief (two pages or so) summary of research results to the Academic Dean. If more extensive research papers are part of individual proposals and research projects, a copy may substitute for this summary. On September 26, 1995, students are required to present the results of research at a poster session.

AUDIT - Students who complete a summer research project (including presentation) in accord with program and project requirements and who are endorsed by their faculty mentor will have this summer research experience noted on the transcript as an audit.

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS - Students may apply for assistance in meeting costs of research. If these are funded, the materials, supplies, and equipment will become property of the college and revert to the department after termination of the research project. An estimated budget and costs must be prepared and submitted with the proposal. Such costs, if appropriately invoiced and receipted in the Accounting Office and approved by the faculty mentor may not exceed $500.

SELECTION OF AWARDS - Selection for these competitive awards are made annually by the Summer Science Scholar Committee. This committee makes decisions about individual recipients as well as about the total number of student research projects to be funded in each year. This year the members of that committee are Professors Russell Batt, Kathryn Edwards, Thomas Greenslade, Nick Kardulias, Art Leccese, Joan Slonczewski, Steve Slack and Assistant Academic Dean Robert Bennett.

Proposals will be written by the student member of a faculty/student collaborative team and must include the following: a) A clear description of the project. b) A statement about the qualifications of the student researcher to participate in the project. c) A time schedule for the project (normally to total 8 weeks in length.) Specific projects may propose durations of a minimum of seven and a maximum of ten weeks. d) A letter of support from the faculty collaborator. e) An expense budget must be submitted. f) Proposals must be submitted to the Office of the Academic Dean no later than February 20, 1995. Awards will be announced March 3, 1995.
