Take-home Essay – Due April 21, 2013 (11:55PM– via Moodle)

Instructions: Below is a recent article written by Jad Mouawad entitled ÒFuel to Burn: Now What?Ó for the New York Times.  For your take-home exam, you are to write an essay in which you examine the issues addressed by the article.

Evaluate this article using what we have discussed in class over the past few weeks (guest lecturers and assigned readings) using the three prompts, below.  Your response to any one prompt should be no more than 2 pages, double-spaced. Your total pages should not exceed 5 double-spaced pages.  How you format the essay is your choice, you may write one seamless paper or use subheadings to denote the three sections.

1)    Evaluate the important points of this article regarding energy and fossil fuel use;

2)    Evaluate the important points of this article regarding climate change;

3)    Evaluate the important points of this article regarding economics, ethics and IPAT.

We don't want a string of platitudes. You are to fully explain your understanding of the broad range of issues we have covered in this class. It is better to cover a few ideas with care and depth than to answer with a string of simplistic statements. You are free to use any [non-classmate] resources at your disposal, including your readings for this course, web sources, or other issues. Be careful to cite any references that you use and avoid any close paraphrasing. Use quotes as needed. You are not to work in groups or consult with other students.You should use the Turnitin.com (see below) capabilities for not inadvertently using otherÕs words.

In total, your essay should be 4-5 pages, double-spaced and printed (not handwritten).

Due date: The essay is due by midnight April 19th. You will turn it in via the MOODLE site (a Turnitin.com link). You can turn it in early, if you choose.
