Ethogram Assignment: Behavioral Catalog

Objective

Read the Catalog of behaviors (including the section on "Names and Definitions") in the Ethogram Instructions .

What to submit:

  1. First page:
    1. Heading - name of your study animal, dates and times when the animal was observed
    2. Three column headings - Behavior (column 1) and Definition (column 2) and Context (column 3)
      1. Under Behavior, list the name of the behavior observed
      2. Under Definition, a brief and objective description. Do not assign intent to this behavior
      3. Under Context, explain under what conditions you expect to observe this behavior
  2. Second page
    1. Heading - name of study animal, dates and times observed
    2. Organization of the behavior by functional categories (i.e., foraging, movement, social, etc.)
      1. For each functional category, provide the following:
        1. Overview : What are they? How big a portion of the animal's activities do you think they will fill?
          1. EXAMPLE: Movement Behaviors: This includes any behavior in which the animal travels from one location to another. Should be a very common category of behavior.
        2. List of behaviors that will be in that functional category:
          1. EXAMPLE: Movement will include the following behaviors: RUN, WALK, SKIP, SALTATE
  3. Third page
    1. A quick outline of your plan for the next phase of the ethogram (direct observation). Essentially, I want to know how you expect to accomplish 6-8 hours of direct observation of your study animal.

NOTE: This doesn't need to be verbose. Much of this is in outline/telegraphic format. I want to see that you have watched these animals and thought carefully enough about their behaviors to be able to define them objectively and functionally.
