Thoracic Vertebrae

(Lateral view)

There are 13 thoracic vertebrae

Note how the size and shape of the dorsal spine varies from the anterior to posterior thoracic vertebrae. In addition the transverse processes become reduced and are completely absent in the last three thoracic vertebrae.

The thoracic vertebrae are characterized by their association with ribs. Therefore, before examining representative vertebrae you should examine the structure of the ribs.
