Spring Migration Bird Walk

Find some of the 170 species that have been spotted here, especially during migration.  Binoculars and field guides are available, all levels welcome!   If you can’t make this one, join us on Wednesday mornings at 8am through May, and on two upcoming Saturdays: April 19 and May 3.

Bald Eagle Observation
  AT ITS NEW TIME:  Monday, March 24th, 6:30pm.

Did you know that in 2007 Knox Co. boasted four nesting pairs of bald eagles?  Meet at the BFEC to hear about Ohio’s eagle population from a ODNR Division of Wildlife educator, then drive or bicycle a few miles to catch a glimpse of eagles nesting along the Kokosing River.  Participants must provide their own transportation.  Program will begin PROMPTLY to ensure adequate daylight.  Come a few minutes early to talk with local eagle experts!

Early Spring Wildflower Hike - Sunday, March 30, 2:00pm @ Brooklyn St. Trailhead
Kick off spring with a four mile hike in search of brave, early wildflowers on our new northern trail system.  Wear sturdy hiking shoes.  To get there from Mount Vernon:  Follow Rte. 229 (Gambier Road) east approximately four miles.  Turn right onto Rte. 308 (Wiggin St.), and take immediate left onto Brooklyn St.  Trail head is located half way up the hill.  Parking available in Gambier.
 
Natural History of Knox County Aliens - Sunday, April 6, 2:00pm.
Come on out and meet some of Knox County's least welcomed vegetation!  BFEC Facility Manager David Heithaus will amaze and appall you as he leads a tour revealing the “alien,” or invasive plant species that can aggressively take over their new habitats and limit biodiversity.  Learn how to identify them and protect yourself!
 
Fire in the Wild - Wednesday, April 16, 7:00pm
A discussion of fire ecology and firefighting with poet and author Mike Newell. Mike served as a wild land firefighter in Alaska in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Now retired from teaching, he works intermittently on twenty-person hand crews for the US Forest Service on western wildfires.
 
Earth Day Health Expo & Marathon - Sunday, April 20, 12:00-4:00pm @ Kenyon Athletic Center.
This FREE event will focus on how to keep ourselves and our world healthy - two goals that often go hand-in-hand!  Features will include door prizes, music, retail and organization vendors, farmers market, live animals, and hands-on activities for people of all ages. Help cheer on the Earth Day Challenge Marathon runners as they finish at the event!
