The organic part, porphyrin, is made up of four pyrrole groups. The four pyrroles are linked by methane bridges to form a tetrapyrrole ring. The particular porphyrin found in hemoglobin is protoporphyrin IX, which contains four methyl, two vinyl, and two propionate side chains.
