Recording water levels (Mitsch and Gosselink, 1993)

  • Record with a water level recorder
  • Record manually each visit to the site with a staff gauge

Purposes:

  • Determine hydroperiod
  • Frequency of flooding
  • Duration of flooding
  • Water depth
  • Change in storage water budget

Evapotranspiration measurements (Mitsch and Gosselink, 1993)

  • Use of Evapotranspiration pans
  • Measured by determining the diurnal water level fluctuation

Precipitation of throughfall measurements (Mitsch and Gosselink, 1993)

  • Placing rain gauges in random locations throughout the wetland
  • Use of weather data

Purposes:

  • Determine surface water runoff

Groundwater measurements (Mitsch and Gosselink, 1993)

  • Place shallow wells around the wetland

Purposes:

  • Obtain information on the hydroperiod
  • Find the direction of groundwater flow
