DECAPITATION MARKS

These are photos of the skull and two vertebrae of a decapitated individual who was excavated from a Romano-British cemetery in Gloucestershire, England; the burial has been dated to A.D. 120.  On the skull the bottom arrow is pointing to a missing portion of bone on the mandible.  The vertebrae (the second and third cervical) also show damage caused by the executioner's blade.  The fractures seen on the skull (right parietal region) are speculated to be from an old sword injury.  Judging by the amount of healing present on this wound, the sword injury took place a long time before decapitation occurred.
