Fish
The size and diversity of fish populations
on Altoid is gigantic. Usually small, these fish tend for the most part
to stay amongst the many clumps of underwater plans, both for protection
and for the food to be found there in the form of algae. Others burrow
in the mud. The larger fish tend to be carnivorous, feeding mostly on the
small, numerous darters that abound in all Altoid's waterways. Fish are
an important part of the diets of alligator snakes, bears, beatles and,
as has been said, other fish. They are also the exclusive food of swimming
birds. For the most part completely defenseless save for their speed and
elusiveness, fish populations nevertheless remain constant in the face
of heavy predation due to speed at and the numbers in which they spawn.
The main role of fish is to provide
food for other species. Without them. many animals, especially Alligator
Snakes, would be threatened with starvation, while the birds would unquestionably
become extinct, thus removing another species that feeds the Alligator
Snakes. The snakes in turn would be forced to subsist on frogs and rodents,
and their numbers would be decimated. The normally huge amount of dead
fish is the main source of nutrients for sub and semi-submarine plants,
which would sicken without them and effect even more species.
