Occipital

(Posteroventral view)

The occipital bone forms the posterior margin of the skull. It is composed of three fused bones, the dorsal supraoccipital, the posterior exoccipital, and the ventral basioccipital. The edge of the supraoccipital is the nuchal crest.

The occipital condyles, located on either side of the foramen magnum, are the points at which the skull articulates with the atlas in the vertebral column.
