Atlas (Anteroventral view)

The atlas is the first cervical vertebra. The prezygapophyses of this bone articulate with the occipital condyles on the occipital bone. This articulation allows the cat to nod its head and cock it to the side but it does not allow for much rotation. This is the job of the axis.
