Chapter 2: The Effects

The effects of the biological attack of Clostridium botulinum were immediately felt by the inhabitants of earth. Clostridium botulinum releases a toxin that attacks the nervous system causing paralysis, eventually leading to heart failure and death. We found it did not take many bacterium to kill us. They would grow at an extremely fast rate, and there was no feasable way to contain them. The covered the continents and ruthlessly overwhelmed our global support network..

The bacteria was everywhere. In the plants, the animals, in the dead, it even felt as if it lived in the air we breathed. Because of its genetic manipulation, it could survive in water, and using water as a medium it could be ingested by animals or diffused into plants. Humanity was faced with eating this bacterium or starving, the bacterium survived everywhere, completely harmless until it was inside a human. The bacterium used their spores to lie dormant in their hosts until a human digested them, and they would multiply at an astonishing rate. Of course the exponential decline of humanity was inconceivable. Humanity had great expectations of their population, as it levelled off at 9 billion, a number we were soon to reach...

But here is the actual figure for our population. Within 15 years the populations was just over 1 million because of the exponential decline, which has been calculated using the equation: Population Total= 6500000000 (Population as of the yaer 2006) x 0.56 ^ (x years). Those million survived to where we are now...
