Although Biosphere
II failed as a possible way to colonize other planets, the project still
has much to teach us. Obviously, the problems that arose throughout this
mission will help us in our further attempts to create self-sustaining
ecosystems. Additionally, much has been learned--and will continue to be
learned--about ecology in general. Most importantly, however, Biosphere
II serves as a chilling reminder that humankind is currently incapable
of surviving apart from the well-balanced ecosystems that already exist
on Earth. First and foremost, we must strive to preserve Biosphere I, because
we have nowhere else to go.
